MSO meets William Basinski
During INTONAL you can experience the avant-garde composer William Basinski in our concert hall. Over the past 40 years, Basinski has established himself as one of our time's foremost experimental sound artists and is a cult figure within the ambient scene. In the concert, the unreleased work The Disintegration Loops V is performed live for the first time by the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, a monumental work created in connection with 9/11. During the evening, Basinski also performs brand new electronic works from the album September 23rd.
The minimalist composer William Basinski (US) is a megastar in the ambient scene. He is best known for his acclaimed work The Disintegration Loops – his magnum opus, the creation of which has become somewhat legendary. The work was created when Basinski was digitizing parts of his archive, and while he was working, the attacks on the World Trade Center occurred on September 11, 2001. From the roof of his Brooklyn apartment, he saw his city in ruins, while his hypnotic, enveloping and ethereal sound world took shape. These parallel events gave the project a purpose. In addition to The Disintegration Loops being praised by e.g. Pitchfork, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, this became a kind of mourning for the unimaginable that had happened.
During INTONAL, we invite the Malmö audience to see a true world-famous experimentalist in a meeting with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra. Basinski's music is rarely performed by a symphony orchestra, and several works will be premiered during the concert. The concert consists of two acts where William Basinski opens in Act I with selected pieces from his new album September 23rd. In Act II, the Malmö Symphony Orchestra performs a 32-minute fifth volume of The Disintegration Loops – a volume of this great work that has neither been recorded nor performed before.
