The pulse of minimalism and the shimmering tonal dreams of impressionism come together on an evening where time itself seems to dissolve.
John Adams brings together minimalism and his Romantic influences in the epic work Harmonielehre. The title is taken from Arnold Schönberg’s guide to music history, spanning the Renaissance to late Romanticism. Drawing inspiration from Wagner, Sibelius, and Mahler, Adams creates an abundance of musical ideas that show how every style and movement is connected to earlier eras.
According to Adams, Debussy was the most radical composer around the turn of the last century—the one who freed music from the strictures of major and minor tonality, allowing chords to float freely. In Images, Debussy paints nature scenes with transparent harmonies and invites us to a Spanish fiesta with tambourine and castanets.
