Hyeryung Hedy Lim
Place of birth: Republic of Korea
What year did you begin to play your instrument, and why that specific instrument? I started playing the flute in 2002. I was playing the violin since I was 4 years old but was more interested in wind instruments somehow. So I went to several orchestra concerts with mom and very much liked how the flutes sound and look in the orchestra.
When did you begin to work in MSO? 2019
What does your educational background look like? Seoul Arts High School, Seoul National University, Colburn Conservatory of Music and Sibelius Academy.
What is you favourite moment from your time in the MSO? I think this is true for most musicians—our favorite moments are often those we experience while performing: breathing together, making eye contact, and sharing our energy, all for the sake of the music.
I once performed Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique while I was pregnant, and it was such a joyful performance that even the baby in my womb started kicking nonstop!
Even after returning to work following childbirth, I found that same incredible energy and joy in performing Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5.
In what other orchestras/ensembles or other contexts have you worked? Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Finnish National Opera and Tapiola Sinfonietta.
Who is you favourite composer? It’s hard to pick some. But I love to listen to Schumann, Schubert, Mozart and Mahler.
What do you prefer to do in your spare time? Movies, books, and listening to music
What is your favourite food? It’s really hard to pick my favourite but I like all Korean food, also sushi and pasta.
Why should everyone go and listen to symphonic music? I think making music is with sound, breathing, emotion and musician’s passion. All the musicians make an effort for one moment. So if you come and be there with us, you will feel our passion, love, and a lot of energy so you can feel that music is alive.
