Tchaikovsky Festival #1 2023
- Concert information
-
Due to production reasons, we need to adjust the concerts of the Tchaikovsky Festival. The festival still features several Tchaikovsky symphonies in a mixed program of well-known and beloved symphonies, as well as the less frequently performed symphonies.
Tchaikovsky Festival #1
The Tchaikovsky festival opens with Symphony no 3, the composer’s only one in a major key. Even though he himself wrote “the symphony offers no especially innovative ideas”, nevertheless he was a good second after Berlioz in using a waltz as the basis for an entire symphonic movement, more particularly the second. Symphony no 5 too, contains a waltz, this time in the third movement. He composed the symphony during a few months in the middle of 1888, and frequently suffered bouts of lack of confidence. “If I am not mistaken, this is worse than its predecessors”.
The opening however, was met with enthusiastic applause.
