Jazz in the Cube: Bria Skonberg

New York-based trumpeter and singer Bria Skonberg dresses traditional jazz and swing in a modern way. Bria Skonberg is an award-winning trumpeter, singer and songwriter based in New York.

She is most renowned for her brilliant ability to bring the traditional and the modern together in her music. As a teenager, she was a professional bandleader in British Columbia, Canada. Bria then moved to Vancouver and earned her degree in trumpet performance from Capilano University. Since arriving in New York in 2010, she has been at the forefront of a renaissance for classic American jazz music as both a performer and educator, organizing concerts and workshops for students of all ages at several established music institutions.

Her music has been streamed over 30 million times, The New York Times has described her as “a shining hope of hot jazz” and The Wall Street Journal has called her one of the most versatile and impressive musicians of her generation. She has played at hundreds of festivals and venues worldwide, including Monterey, the Montreal Jazz Festival and Carnegie Hall. Bria Skonberg's debut album reached number 5 on the Billboard Jazz chart and her seventh studio album What it means received a rare five-star review in jazz magazine Downbeat. She is a Juno award-winning artist, ten-time Downbeat Rising Star, recipient of the Legend Award from the Society for the Preservation of the Great American Songbook and nominated for the European "Académie du Jazz" award in 2025.
