Jan Garbarek featuring Trilok Gurtu

After a concert with Jan Garbarek and his current quartet at the packed Royal Festival Hall in London, critic Sarah Chaplin wrote: "Now, after more than fifty years in his career, Garbarek is as close to perfection as is humanly possible, and he proves to be a master of silence and sound, of both striking rhythmic figures and achingly beautiful phrases. 

"The German reviewer WOLFRAM GOERTZ experienced the same concert in Dusseldorf in 2025 and wrote at the time: "A cool, crystal-clear Norwegian, a shaman from India, a Buddha from Germany and a turbocharged Brazilian... let the world spin in its madness: the true giants will not be shaken." 

Garbarek, this Norwegian jazz legend and world star, is a constant in European jazz. His quartet stands for quality, without sacrificing melody. "The human voice is my ideal," says Garbarek, and there are probably few saxophonists who have come as close to that ideal as he. His clear and puristic tone has become his inimitable hallmark. His tone, which is his personality, is so concentrated that you recognize it immediately. 

On ECM Records, Garbarek has released several albums that are now considered milestones in jazz history. With musical partners such as Keith Jarrett – Belonging and My Song, or the classic Hilliard ensemble, with whom Garbarek recorded Officium, one of the greatest musical crossover successes of all time. At this concert, you will meet him together with musicians who have followed him for a long time and they each contribute in their own way: at the piano, long-time companion Rainer Brüninghaus, behind the bass you will find Yuri Daniel from Brazil and of course also the wild drum wizard from India - Trilok Gurtu. Gurtu now lives in Hamburg and has become famous as a mediator between Indian and Western musical traditions. 

The wonderful rhythmist is often mentioned in the press as a singing shaman and medicine man. Together, these four musical personalities embark on a new journey every concert and now Stjärnkvällar has the great pleasure of inviting you as a fellow traveler! This is Jan Garbarek's only appearance in Sweden in 2026 and 2027.
