Philip Glass & Philip Glass Ensemble
50-year jubilee and a retrospective concert spanning his entire career
On 26 May the legendary American composer and pianist Philip Glass returns to Malmö Live. On his only previous visit to Sweden in 2017, Malmö Live attracted its record audience, with the auditorium totally sold out, and even the choir stalls full to the last seat. Philip Glass praised the concert hall’s acoustics and said immediately after the end of the concert that he wanted to come back. And now he is doing just that.
This time Philip Glass will be accompanied by his ensemble, celebrating its 50th anniversary, and apart from the concert at Malmö Live they will also be appearing at Cirkus in Stockholm on 27 May. In other words, this year an even larger audience will have the fantastic opportunity to experience one of our time’s foremost composers and pianists live. These two concerts are the only performances that the Philip Glass Ensemble is choosing to give in northern Europe during its 50-year jubilee.
The Philip Glass Ensemble was started by Philip Glass fifty years ago, in May 1969, through a concert at Whitney Museum in New York, at the time to give expression to the more experimental sides of his work. From a very early stage they used a lot of visual expression and a large number of instruments. These days they are still at the forefront of art music, but they mostly play works from Philip Glass’ solo albums, operas and shows. This concert contains a selection of music spanning the entirety of Philip Glass’ discography and career, specially arranged by Philip Glass himself ahead of the concerts in Sweden.
