About Mendelssohns Italian

Massive tones in striking colours surge forward in a rapidly escalating crescendo. Anna Clyne’s Masquerade may only be a short work, but it is very rich in content.

The English horn is seldom afforded centre stage, but Honegger’s Concerto da camera is a double concerto for the unusual combination of this mysterious sounding instrument and the flute.

Berwald’s opera about the vengeful Countess Estrella de Soria is not particularly well known, but the overture has long lived a life of its own in concert houses.

Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 has its origins in the impressions gained by the composer during an Italian journey: religious processions, pastoral scenes and local dances.
